Beit Eshel

Beit Eshel was one of the first three observatories in the Negev and symbolized the beginning of pioneering settlement in the region. In the Egyptian shelling of the Negev during the War of Independence, the settlement was destroyed and eight members of Beit Eshel who were defending the settlement were killed. Remnants of the walls, the guard posts, communication channels and some of stone buildings with arches remained. Beit Eshel is the testimony to the heroism of the people of the settlement.

In the 1960s, a group of volunteers turned Beit Eshel into a historical-educational site. Beit Eshel was declared a national site on July 19th, 1985. The site is located within the Beersheba Park. As part of the development work the park was restored, as were its remains.
