The Negev Brigade Memorial (Andarta)
The Negev Brigade Memorial is a monument commemorating the activity of the Palmach Negev Brigade in the War of Independence. It is located at the top of a limestone hill in the east of Beersheba.
The monument, designed by artist Danny Karavan, was established between 1963 and 1968 to honor the memory of the brigade that stopped the invasion of Egypt and protected the water sources of the Negev. It is made of bare concrete and consists of 18 different symbolic elements connected to the Palmach and the War of Independence, such as perforated remains of watchtowers that received fire, a pipe that symbolizes water artery the soldiers defended and so on. You can also see the names of the fallen soldiers, the Palmach symbol, a battle diary, battle sketches, verses and poems. The memorial is an inseparable part of Beersheba landscape that can be seen from almost everywhere. The monument overlooks the city to the west and the desert on all other sides, and is one of the familiar symbols of the Negev and Beersheba city.
The landscaping work was carried out by landscape architect Zvi Dekel.
Next to the monument there is a 295-dunam national park with a beautiful flora-like plant (the Irano Turani).
